On distingue généralement les économistes universitaires (souvent peu connus) des économistes de marchés employés dans le secteur financier (Patrick Artus, Marc Touati, Jean-Paul Betbèze, ...). Mais cette distinction tent à s’estomper car beaucoup d’économistes ont une double casquette (poste universitaire + consultant dans le privé) et parfois une mission "évangélisatrice" dans les médias (cf.
